The first big "don’t do" in business is DO NOT jump into a business without doing thorough research. You want to be sure you know all of the details about the business you are involved in. You want to know financial details as well as information about your competition. When you take the time to research a specific business you insure success for yourself. You wouldn’t want any surprises popping up when it comes to your business. You want to be able to set yourself up so that your business operates as smoothly as possible.

The second big "don’t do" is skimping on advertising. If your business is not advertising in one form or another there is a big chance that it will see a loss in services ordered or product sold. If you are starting a home business online you can’t just believe in the build it and they will come philosophy.  You need to be aggressive in your advertising to get the word out there, build brad awareness, and start creating loyal customers.  Taking out a small advertisement in the local newspaper is not going to generate much business. The business will be better off by running large pay per click campaigns and running banner advertinsing as well as marketing in the social media networks. These may cost more, but you will reach a larger customer base. Without reaching customers, the business will fail.

Finally, DO NOT take your eye off your competition. If your bsuiness has a specialized product or sevice then you definitely need to keep your competion’s actions close at hand. An offline example of this is would be video rental store. Video rental stores all sell the same things - videos.  So if you are in this market then you would want to be aware of what videos and titles the other store offers, how big their selection is, what their rates are, and what promotions they are running. In order to compete you want to either match what is offered or offer a slightly different, more compelling promotion.
