Having a Home Based Business in a Small Home

By Chris Stirling On November 18, 2009 1 Comment

One of the factors that many people consider when deciding whether to start a home based business is the amount of space that they require. Many people wonder whether they need a dedicated office for their business and whether a small home really affords enough space for an entire business. In most cases, a small home offers plenty of space to run a business if the space is used well.

Many times, a home based business is housed in one corner of a room. With a desk, computer and small filing cabinet, most home businesses can function quite well in little space. There are a number of small corner desks on the market that house a desktop computer, monitor and even some supplies all designed to fit within a small space.

A corner desk will fit into just about any room, or even a landing. Using a small filing cabinet next to the desk, or under it in some cases, allows the storage of receipts, notes, order forms and other paperwork that the home based business requires.

For people who have a laptop computer, their home based business can go anywhere. The back patio can be an office in the afternoons and the living room couch can be the office in the evenings. By keeping most of the business paperwork in a small filing cabinet to keep them from being lost, a desk isn’t even necessary when you have a laptop. This makes a very small space big enough for a home based business.

If space is needed for product inventory, a storage rental unit can be used. These are generally inexpensive and provide an enormous amount of space for inventory items, freeing the home from too many business items.

The Flexibility of a Home Based Business

By Chris Stirling On September 7, 2009 No Comments

Many people find their biggest complaint about their job is that it offers very little flexibility. There are few jobs that allow workers to come in whenever they feel like it and to work only as long as they want to in order to accomplish their goals. While it’s pretty hard to find a job like that, it isn’t at all difficult to have that same kind of flexibility when a person owns a home based business.

Most home businesses are run during the hours that the owner chooses. This may be when there is free time that can be spent working, during regular daily hours, or only on the weekends. Many people start a home based business they can spend part time on after work, for awhile, until they are earning enough to make it a full-time job. Other people start their home based business full time right away in order to replace income that they have lost from another source. Whether it’s full time or part time, small business owners working at home can generally choose their own hours, their own work days and their own working conditions.

This flexibility is something that many people crave in order to be free from the long hours that many jobs demand in today’s job market. Long hours can make it hard to socialize with friends and to spend time with family. Many people choose to start a home based business in order to get back the freedom to spend with the people they care about. Working at home as your own boss can mean that working hours are flexible, leaving time to do other things that are important. Whether that’s having quality time at home or engaging in hobbies, having a flexible, home based business can make it happen.

Choosing a Home Business Opportunity

By Chris Stirling On September 4, 2009 No Comments

There are a lot of business opportunities out there, but a home business opportunity often presents the best option in terms of low expenses and a high rate of profit. A land-based business that requires some type of retail space can be extremely expensive to run, even in rural areas. No matter where a home business is run, the costs are minimal and the time and money savings of avoiding a commute and daycare costs make it a great opportunity.

Many people who are interested in running a home business believe they must have an item to sell in order to be in business online. While that is one type, there are many other types of businesses that can be run from home. A service business can be a high-profit option. In these businesses, the customers are usually found online or in the local area, and the business is generally run online. These opportunities mean that no commute is necessary and there is no need to work in an isolated office somewhere. It’s possible to stay close to family and in the comforts of home while earning money.

Anyone who doesn’t like working for a boss every day and doesn’t like spending most of the week away from home is a perfect candidate for a home business opportunity. Many people have already found their lives can be much different when they are in control of their own income and working hours. There is nothing quite like knowing you are in control of how much income you make and what days and times you want to perform your work tasks. By seizing a home business opportunity, it is possible to make that happen.

Checklist for Home Based Business Online

By Chris Stirling On August 10, 2009 No Comments

Starting up a home based business is a huge decision. Not only do you need a plan, but you need self-discipline and motivation to reap the benefits. If you are thinking about starting up a business from the comfort of your home, take a look at these practical considerations before you get started.

  • Business Plan – When you decide to start up your business, you need a creative perspective about where you’ll be going. You want to have it all written out, so you can show investors, employees, and whoever asks. You’ll feel more focused and motivated this way.
  • Marketing Plan – How do you plan on drumming up work? Whether you go with content writing, affiliate marketing, blogging, or paid surveys, you need to have a plan on how you’re going to get the word out about your product or service.
  • Financial Plan – Luckily, most online business endeavors have little to no start up costs. However, you might be in a place where you’re working one job while you get your online business started up. Carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of the costs to get started and the amount of profit you expect to make compared to the amount of time you will spend doing it.
  • Accounting – Even if you are just a one man show, try to record all the money that goes in and out. You might want to hire someone or buy a piece of software to help track your money. This will also help you decide the most profitable directions to take your business. In some cases, you may want to get started on paying quarterly taxes.
  • Budget – This one is simple. Do you want your cash flow to control you, or do you want to control your cash flow?

To get started with your home based business, treat it as you would any business endeavor. Whether you are a single entity or looking to hire several employees and incorporate, these are the backbone to your plan.
