What Is Your Budget

By Chris Stirling On May 7, 2009 Under Work At Home

When you start looking for a work at home business you need to sit down and think about it first. One of the first things you should look at is how much money you can afford to spend starting up your business. If you don’t do this you can quickly find yourself spending your money faster than you can earn it.

Sure there are plenty of websites out there promoting a free work at home program but lets be honest, do you really think it is free? If it was free to start a business online then everyone would be doing it and nobody would be promoting it because they wouldn’t be making any money promoting it.

Like starting a business in the real world there are costs to working from home online. The costs of starting a business online are significantly less that they are in the offline world but there are still some costs.

For example If you don’t have any experience working from home online then you will probably want to invest in a “how to” program. This is no different than wanting to build a deck on your house and purchasing a carpenter’s 101 book from your local bookstore. By investing the $25 in a “how to work from home” program you can save yourself hundreds of hours learning what to do and thousands of dollars in mistakes.

Another example of some expenses you will need to spend to start working from home are basics like webhosting fees. It is difficult to run a business online without a website. That would be like selling coffee without a coffee maker. Web hosting fees are not much, usually less than $100 per year but you need to consider such expenses before you start.

Online business are cheap and easy to set up, they are not free so be sure to set a budget before you start.  As your revenue increases you can spend more on growing your business.  Setting a budget before you start will ensure your business produces income vs bleeding your bank account dry.

True enough! I didn’t start an online business because I was swayed by it being “free”–I knew that I had to fund them one way or another. People can get funds from their savings like I did, from a loan (they have to pay it back or else, trouble!), or even government grants.
